Which embassy should you apply to?
A Schengen short-stay visa lets you stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Choosing the wrong country is a common mistake. The European Commission's rules work like this:
- One country only: apply to that country.
- Several countries: apply to the country where you will spend the longest time.
- Equal time in each: apply to the country whose border you will cross first.
Your flights, hotels and itinerary should all match. Eight nights in Paris and two in Amsterdam means you apply to France.
Schengen embassies in Accra and where to submit
Visa centres only collect your documents, fingerprints and photo. The embassy or consulate makes the decision. This is what the official pages showed in September 2026:

Schengen visa fee in 2026

Centres usually charge the fee in Ghana cedis at their own exchange rate. The German Embassy takes cedis in cash or Visa/Mastercard, and Hungary takes cards only. Visa centres also add a service charge on top of the visa fee. On the official pages we checked, these were €24 for France, €23 for Switzerland, €20 for the Netherlands and €19 for Denmark. You will not get the visa fee back if you are refused.
Schengen visa requirements in Ghana: document checklist
Each embassy publishes its own checklist for each purpose of travel, so download the current one for your destination. Typical items, using Germany's tourism checklist as an example:
- Passport: valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with two blank pages.
- Application form: completed and signed. Germany uses the online VIDEX form, which you print out.
- Photos: recent, white background (Germany asks for one, Switzerland for two).
- Travel medical insurance: at least €30,000 of cover for emergency treatment, hospital care and repatriation, valid in every Schengen state for your whole trip.
- Bank statements: Germany asks for personal statements for the last three months, plus payslips for the same period.
- Employment letter: a letter from your employer confirming your job, salary and approved leave. Self-employed applicants usually provide business registration documents instead.
- Itinerary: a realistic day-by-day travel plan.
- Flight reservation: a return booking. Germany says you do not need to buy the ticket yet.
- Accommodation: hotel bookings, or an invitation if you are staying with a host.
- Civil status documents: Germany asks for your original birth certificate plus a copy, and marriage or children's birth certificates where relevant.
- Sponsor documents (if someone else pays): for Germany, this can be a formal obligation letter from your host (Verpflichtungserklärung) that is no more than six months old.
Germany states that incomplete applications can be refused, so bring everything to your appointment.
Appointment tips
- Book early. You can apply up to six months before your trip and should apply at least 15 days before. The German Embassy in Ghana says the wait between joining its waiting list and getting an appointment is currently several weeks. Register as soon as your dates are known.
- Book one slot per person. Germany needs a separate appointment for every applicant, including children.
- Choose the right visa category. If you book the wrong one, you may be turned away and have to book again.
- Watch out for appointment sellers. Official appointments are free. Germany and Hungary both warn against paying anyone for a slot, and Germany blocks applicants who misuse its booking system. BLS says its staff never ask for cash in exchange for appointments.
- Arrive on time. Germany does not let latecomers in. Hungary lets you cancel an appointment but not move it.
Processing times
Under EU rules, a consulate normally decides a short-stay application within 15 calendar days. This can stretch to 45 days if it needs more documents or checks. Local guidance in Accra:
- Germany: about 14 days.
- Switzerland: usually 10 working days once your file is complete, according to the Swiss VFS page. Longer in busy periods.
- Netherlands, Spain, Denmark: 15 days as standard, up to 45 days.
Avoid paying for non-refundable travel until your visa is issued.
Multiple-entry visas and the cascade rule
The EU Visa Code has a "cascade" rule that rewards frequent travellers who have used their past visas properly. Someone who has obtained and lawfully used three visas in the previous two years can be considered for a one-year multiple-entry visa. After that comes a two-year visa, and then a five-year visa. The validity can never run past your passport's expiry date. It is not automatic, and a consulate can issue a shorter visa if it has doubts. EES and ETIAS in 2026
- EES (Entry/Exit System): fully live at all external Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. When a Ghanaian visa holder arrives, officers record your passport details, fingerprints and facial image, along with the date and place of entry and exit. This replaces passport stamps.
- ETIAS: the European Commission says it is due to start in the last quarter of 2026. It only applies to visa-exempt travellers, so Ghanaians who hold a Schengen visa do not need it.

No. You submit Swiss Schengen applications at VFS Global in Accra, where you book your biometrics appointment. Long-stay (D) visa applicants contact the embassy by email to arrange an appointment.
How long does a Schengen visa take in Ghana?
The standard time is 15 calendar days, which can be extended to 45. The German Embassy currently quotes about 14 days. Apply at least 15 days before you travel, and preferably much earlier.
How much money should be in my bank account for a Schengen visa?
The embassy pages we checked do not set one fixed amount for Ghana. You need to show you can afford your trip. Germany, for example, asks for three months of personal bank statements and payslips, so steady income and a sensible balance matter more than a one-off deposit.
Do Ghanaians need ETIAS to travel to Europe?
No. ETIAS is only for visa-exempt nationalities. Ghanaians still need a Schengen visa, and your fingerprints and photo are recorded in the Entry/Exit System when you cross the border.
