What VFS Global does (and does not do)
Many embassies in Accra contract a commercial partner to receive visa files instead of taking them over their own counters. In Ghana, the best known is VFS Global.
At a VFS centre, staff typically:
- check you in for a pre-booked appointment;
- receive your application pack and passport;
- record fingerprints and a digital photo where the destination requires them;
- collect service charges and, where applicable, fees;
- send your file securely to the embassy or visa office; and
- return your passport and decision envelope.
What VFS does not do matters just as much. Canada's immigration department states plainly that visa application centres play no part in decisions and are not allowed to give visa advice; France-Visas likewise says only the embassy can decide. Paying for extra VFS services will not speed up or improve the decision either.
Which countries use VFS Global in Ghana
These destinations were confirmed on official government or VFS pages on 17 September 2026. VFS may serve others from Accra, so use the country selector on visa.vfsglobal.com (choose Ghana, then your destination) for anything not listed.

Different destinations use different buildings, so always follow your appointment letter.

Canada applicants take note: VFS says the current Canada VAC will shut at 12 noon on Thursday 1 October 2026 and reopen at Accra Digital Centre on 5 October 2026. It has also warned applicants not to make advance payments to the old VAC bank account while new payment details are prepared. Check the VFS Canada Ghana page for the full new address before your appointment.
How to book a VFS Ghana appointment
- Confirm the correct route. Use the tables above, then the embassy's own visa page.
- Complete the government form first where required. The UK (GOV.UK), Canada (IRCC), France (France-Visas) and Denmark (online application and payment) all expect this before you attend.
- Create a VFS account on visa.vfsglobal.com, selecting Ghana as your location and the correct destination.
- Choose the right visa category and centre, then pick an available slot.
- Pay any service charge requested through the official site and save your confirmation letter.
- Arrive on time with your passport, confirmation and complete file.
Booking the appointment itself costs nothing for Canada biometrics, and the Netherlands and German missions both warn against paying intermediaries to secure slots. Germany says it may block people who misuse its booking system.
Biometrics at the centre
- Netherlands (Schengen): applicants aged 12 and over give fingerprints at the appointment.
- UK: every applicant proves identity with a passport and gives fingerprints and a photo at the appointment.
- Canada: most applicants must enrol within 30 days of receiving the biometric instruction letter. The IRCC biometric fee is CAN$85 per person (CAN$170 maximum for a family applying together). Children aged 13 and under and people aged 80 and over are generally exempt.
Optional paid services
VFS sells extras on top of its standard charge. Depending on the destination, these have included courier return of passports, SMS status alerts, photocopying and printing, form-filling help, premium lounge access, out-of-hours "prime time" slots and, for UK applicants, keeping your passport while you apply. All of them are optional. The VFS Canada page states clearly that such charges do not fast-track or prioritise a decision, so decline anything you don't actually need. Document checklist tips
- Use the checklist for your destination and visa type - a UK list is not a Schengen list.
- Arrange papers in the order of the checklist and bring a photocopy of each original.
- Check your passport's validity and blank pages against the embassy's rule before booking.
- For Schengen visas, include travel medical insurance that meets the embassy's minimum cover.
- Translate any document not in English (or the language the embassy accepts) using a certified translator.
- Make sure names, dates and employer details match exactly across forms, bank statements and letters.
Tracking and passport collection
Once your file has left the centre, the decision time depends on the embassy, not VFS:
- UK: a decision usually arrives within three weeks of your appointment.
- Netherlands: average processing is currently up to 25 calendar days and can stretch to 45. Use the official tracking tool rather than calling VFS or the embassy.
- France: follow progress in your France-Visas account under "My requests".
- Canada: updates appear in your IRCC account.
When your passport is ready, collect it in person (or through an authorised person where allowed) during collection hours, or pay for courier delivery. For the Netherlands, the "processed" email does not reveal the outcome, so check any visa issued carefully before leaving the counter.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking through look-alike websites or paying "agents" for appointments.
- Going to the wrong building - especially Canada applicants after 5 October 2026.
- Selecting the wrong visa category, which can mean being turned away.
- Applying too late: Schengen applications should be in at least 15 days before travel, and France advises at least a month for long-stay visas.
- Treating VFS staff as advisers or assuming premium services improve your chances.
- Sending money to an old bank account without checking the latest payment notice.

Is VFS Global part of the embassy?
No. VFS Global is a private company working under contract. It accepts applications and biometrics, but the embassy or immigration department makes every decision.
Where is VFS Global located in Accra?
It depends on the destination. The UK and Italy list The Grand Oyeeman on South Liberation Link, France lists One Airport Square, and the Canada centre moves from Abelemkpe to Accra Digital Centre on 5 October 2026. Always follow the address on your appointment letter.
Does VFS Global handle Spain or German visas in Ghana?
No. Spanish visas go through BLS International in Accra, while the German Embassy uses its own online appointment system and Consular Services Portal.
How do I book a VFS appointment for the Netherlands in Ghana?
Book directly on the VFS Netherlands Ghana site at visa.vfsglobal.com. The Dutch government advises applying at least 15 days before travel and no more than six months ahead, and warns against using intermediaries.
Can I pay VFS extra to get my visa faster?

How long does VFS take to return my passport?
